Sustainability and Materials

All Tamart products are crafted from FSC timbers, available in natural oak, natural ash, or black stained ash, and are then made in the UK and Europe.

Materials and Sustainability

Each upholstered piece is offered in a range of natural wool textiles from the British textile producers Mourne Textiles and Bute Fabrics. As part of the collection, Tamart has worked closely with Bute Fabrics to create Contrast – a bespoke black and white woven fabric based on an original fashion textile designed by Tamar de Shalit, which is to be used exclusively for Tamart products. All fabrics used for Tamart furniture are produced in Britain.

Both the Highgate Chairs and the Red Rock Club Chair are available with natural vegetable tanned leathers in chestnut, black and natural colours. The leathers are sourced from Italy.

Tamart takes great care to use fine-quality natural or recycled materials and employs sustainable production techniques to enhance the lifespan of each piece of furniture. All Tamart products are repairable and recyclable.

Sustainability Statement

At TAMART, we believe that exceptional design goes hand in hand with environmental responsibility. Every piece of furniture we craft embodies this principle, blending elegance and functionality with an enduring commitment to sustainability. Our mission is to design furniture that enhances spaces and contributes to a healthier, more sustainable future.

Material and Production Choices
Our commitment to sustainability is reflected in our careful selection of materials and production methods. We prioritise responsibly sourced wood, high-recycled-content metals, and eco-friendly finishes. Partnering with local artisans and using traditional craftsmanship techniques, we reduce waste and minimise the carbon footprint of our production processes, preserving resources for future generations.

Longevity and Lifecycle Design
We design with longevity in mind. TAMART furniture is built to stand the test of time, featuring timeless aesthetics and durable materials that encourage reuse and reduce the need for frequent replacements. This commitment to enduring quality extends to each product’s lifecycle: we ensure that our designs can be easily disassembled, repaired, reupholstered, refurbished or recycled at the end of their use, promoting a circular economy.

Circular Economy Approach
Working towards a circular practice, we prioritise materials with established recycling streams and high recycled content, maximising each product’s lifespan and ensuring that materials can be efficiently repurposed. Our Highgate Chair’s mounting and tightening system is just one example of a design created to facilitate easy repair and long-term use.

Sustainable Packaging
All TAMART packaging is designed to be easily recycled. We use cardboard corner and edge protectors, paper cushioning, recyclable paper tape, and durable, triple-wall cardboard boxes. This packaging system not only reduces waste but also provides excellent impact resistance, protecting our furniture against environmental factors like temperature changes that can affect solid wood furniture.

Stock & Warehousing
To achieve energy efficiency in our operations, we manufacture only what we know we can sell, minimising waste and excess production. We work with a local warehouse and delivery company which uses electrical vans to deliver our furniture to customers. In keeping with our environmental policy, all their vehicles meet the most stringent emissions standards set by the EU and are “Euro 6” compliant.

Thoughtfully Sourced Upholstery
Our upholstery is crafted in collaboration with a Portsmouth-based artisan who uses 100% natural and sustainable materials in alignment with traditional methods. We continually refine our upholstery materials based on their performance and environmental impact:

1. Barrier Cloth Interlining
Schedule 3 Barrier Interliner Cloth/Felt Upholstery Linings of wool and viscose mix, naturally flame retardancy to meet BS5852 ignition source 5 standards. This is designed to be used beneath a non flame-retardant top cover that consists of at least 75% natural fibres. This interliner ensures our furniture meets stringent safety standards without compromising on comfort or aesthetics.

2. Wool felt wadding (needled)
UK made Fire Retardant White Wool/Cotton Wadding made from renewable and biodegradable materials, reducing environmental impact.

3. Haircolok
A 40% natural latex, 30% animal hair, and 30% coir filling emulates traditional techniques while integrating eco-friendly materials. Haircolok is currently treated to meet UK fire regulations. The rubberised hair is the only element that has this disclaimer. Everything else is naturally fire resistant.

4. Natural Latex Core
We use a 1½” natural latex core treated with graphite, providing resilience, comfort and chemical-free fire resistance.

5. Jute Webbing and Hessian
Our foundations use high-quality, wide jute webbing and 10 oz hessian, providing a strong, sustainable base.

6. Dug Roll
Constructed with a 1” paper edge roll, hessian and Haircolok, our dug rolls create a structured edge, enhancing both comfort and durability.

Filling and Staples
We use 8mm BEA galvanized steel staples, chosen for their durability and ease of removal, enabling future re-upholstering and extending the furniture’s lifecycle.

Textiles
Each upholstered piece in the Tamart collection is offered in premium wool textiles from British producers Mourne Textiles and Bute Fabrics, both of whom prioritise sustainable, low-impact practices. In collaboration with Bute Fabrics, Tamart developed “Contrast”—a custom black-and-white weave inspired by an original Tamar de Shalit woven design. Exclusively for Tamart, this eco-friendly fabric aligns with Bute’s commitment to environmentally conscious manufacturing on the Isle of Bute. All textiles for Tamart furniture are sustainably sourced and produced in the UK, reducing transportation impact.

Timber Commitment
Our timber furniture is produced by a company which is certified under FSC 100% and PEFC 100%. These certifications guarantee that the timber used in our furniture originates from sustainably managed forests, preserving biodiversity, supporting local communities, and combating climate change. Beyond responsible timber sourcing, they prioritise local procurement for other materials such as metals, paints, oils, and abrasives. In their commitment to waste reduction, they convert wood by-products into biofuel pellets, which are utilised to heat their facilities.

Design Declare
TAMART has joined Design Declares, a collective of designers, studios, agencies, and institutions united in declaring a climate and ecological emergency. As part of this global movement, we are dedicated to using the power of design to reimagine, restore, and heal our world.

Social Responsibility
Beyond measurable improvements in environmental and social performance, we prioritize a holistic approach grounded in human connection. This includes active involvement in charity, nurturing strong relationships with clients, employees, and suppliers, and fostering positive engagement with the local community. By recognizing and supporting the needs of those around us, we build partnerships that emphasize mutual respect, shared values, and collective well-being, ensuring that social responsibility is woven into every aspect of our work.

Closing Statement
At TAMART, sustainability is not just an initiative; it is an essential value woven into every stage of our design process. By crafting furniture that is as sustainable as it is stylish, we aim to contribute meaningfully to a healthier planet and the spaces we inhabit.
