Purpose
Tamart exists to improve human wellbeing and reduce the environmental harm of the furniture industry, by bringing responsible, lasting design into contemporary production.

Vision
A world where the objects we live with are judged by the lives they improve and the harm they avoid.

Mission
Tamart brings rigorous and humane modernist design into contemporary production. We work from a deep archive, build with responsible materials and supply architects, designers and institutions who share our belief that the objects we live with should be worth keeping. Because furniture that is made with genuine care does not just furnish a room. It improves the life lived in it.

How purpose shapes the business
Our purpose is not a statement alongside the business. It sets what we make, who we make it with and how we are governed. In April 2026 we amended our Articles of Association to adopt the B Corp legal requirement, placing a duty on the director to weigh the interests of workers, suppliers, customers, communities and the environment alongside those of the company. Every supplier we appoint is assessed against human rights and environmental criteria before an order is placed and reassessed annually. Every product is designed to be repaired, reupholstered and kept rather than replaced.

Governance
Tamart Design Limited is a private company limited by shares, registered in England and Wales, company number 14628487. Our Articles of Association were amended on 13 April 2026 to adopt the B Corp legal requirement. Our accounts and filings are public at Companies House.

Social responsibility
Tamart’s commitment to social responsibility extends to every supply chain relationship. We operate a Supplier Code of Conduct and carry out human rights and environmental assessments across our manufacturing partners, recorded in our Sustainable Procurement Policy and reviewed each year. Our five most material suppliers completed and signed assessments in 2026. We are working towards B Corp certification, a process that has shaped our policies, deepened our supplier relationships and raised our standards across the board.

Stakeholder engagement

We identify and engage the people our decisions affect: the workshops and mills that make our pieces, the architects and designers who specify them, the people who live and work with them, and the communities near our production. Our Stakeholder Engagement Plan sets out how we gather their views and how those views reach decisions. If you want to raise something with us, including a concern about our conduct or our supply chain, our grievance procedure is below and we respond to every submission.

Carbon
Tamart is committed to supporting the global ambition to limit warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius, in line with the Paris Agreement and the UN Sustainable Development Goals. As a micro business we are not required to measure our greenhouse gas emissions under the B Lab standards framework. We measure them anyway.

We measure carbon on two tracks. Business level footprint through the SME Climate Hub, and product level footprint through the Devera platform, starting with the Central Stool. Our first annual emissions report covers 1 April 2025 to 31 March 2026 and is available to download below.

Our Climate Action Plan was approved by the director on 13 July 2026 and is reviewed every 36 months, next in July 2029. It commits us to mapping our emissions with a focus on Scope 3 across our supply chain and materials, engaging our European manufacturing partners in climate dialogue and data sharing, and establishing a baseline and setting SMART reduction targets within 24 months. That work is under way.

Our emissions reporting year runs 1 April to 31 March, which differs from our 31 January financial year end. We report on the emissions year so the data stays comparable with our first measurement period.

Interior Design Declares
Amos Goldreich sits on the Steering Group of Interior Design Declares, the UK network of interior design practices, suppliers and educators committed to addressing the climate and biodiversity emergency. Tamart is a signatory. We are committed to using design as a force for positive change.

Political engagement
Tamart does not lobby, does not employ lobbyists and makes no political contributions of any kind. We do engage in collective advocacy where it serves our purpose. We are a signatory to the Better Business Act coalition, which now numbers over 3,000 UK companies and campaigns to align company law with the interests of people and planet, and we have written to our Member of Parliament in support of it. Our Responsible Lobbying Policy sets out the principles that govern any engagement we undertake, and we publish our positions, memberships and political contributions each year on this page.

Materials and upholstery
Each upholstered piece is offered in a range of natural wool textiles from British producers Mourne Textiles and Bute Fabrics. Working closely with Bute Fabrics, Tamart developed Contrast, a bespoke black-and-white woven fabric based on an original textile designed by Tamar de Shalit, produced exclusively for the collection on the Isle of Bute. All Tamart textiles are made in the UK.

The Highgate Chairs are also available in natural vegetable tanned leathers in chestnut, black and natural. Our leather is tanned in Poland by Kaliskie Zaklady Garbarskie, a tannery certified Leather Working Group Silver, using Quebracho and Mimosa vegetable tannins rather than chrome salts. The hides are of Polish origin, traced through a long-term declaration from a named hide supplier.

Tamart’s upholstery is foam-free. Each piece is filled using a combination of natural latex, rubberised hair and coir, wool felt wadding and barrier cloth interlining, built on a foundation of jute webbing and hessian. This construction follows traditional craft methods, avoids synthetic materials and is designed for long service life. Individual components can be disassembled and replaced, and all materials are recyclable or compostable at end of life.

Timber
Our timber is supplied through certified chain of custody. Our principal timber workshop holds both FSC and PEFC chain of custody certification, and our other timber partners hold FSC chain of custody. Timber is supplied as premium AA-grade solid European hardwood, available in natural oak, natural ash or black stained ash, selected for quality, grain and longevity.

We assess our timber suppliers annually and verify their certificates at each review. Where traceability below our direct supplier cannot yet be verified, we record it as an open point rather than claim otherwise, and we raise it at each annual review.

Our primary timber partners convert wood by-products into biofuel pellets used to heat their facilities and prioritise local sourcing for secondary materials including metals, paints and abrasives.

Packaging
We pack without single-use plastics. Cardboard corner and edge protectors, paper cushioning, recyclable paper tape and triple-wall cardboard boxes that give strong impact resistance. The cardboard and paper we use are recyclable through standard household and commercial waste streams.

A small proportion of our packaging is not yet recyclable, mainly adhesives, printed labels and pallet strapping on larger consignments. We audit our packaging by weight each quarter and our Climate Action Plan commit us to reaching 90 per cent recyclable across all product and shipping materials. We would rather tell you where we are than round it up.

Stock and delivery
Tamart manufactures to order, which minimises waste and avoids excess production. Our UK warehouse partner uses diesel vehicles, which meet the Euro 6 emissions standard.
